Lost & Found

For her project Lost & FoundMarilyne Grimmer was interested in lost objects and the stories attached to them.  After visiting the Brussels lost property office to learn more about the types of objects people forget and the way they are classified and listed, she went to meet local residents, passers-by and other neighbours. With the help of various organisations, in particular LD3 ForumTeleserviceDon Bosco and SCP Rempart des Moines, during moments ideally suited to collecting stories about lost property from the people of Brussels, and by distributing posters, several people came forward, telling stories about the objects in question that were sometimes intimate, sometimes funny.

In the Zsenne artlab space, on the evening of the Art+People 2022 event, the 30 photographs and stories transcribed were presented, compiled into a booklet resulting from these encounters and their stories. Visitors were invited to share a story about a lost object, sculpt it from clay and display it at the event. As the evening progressed, the shelf filled with ephemeral souvenirs.

All along the route, between each exhibition at the Art+People event, the various photographs and texts were displayed on advertising boards.

Together they talked about memories, regrets, coincidences or small miracles. While telling their stories to the artist, the participants reconstructed their lost object in clay. They staged it depending on the context of the loss of the initial object: a watch on the wrist, a turtle on the side of the road and even a tooth in a smile.
