Bureau des colères

Devised by the Habitant·e·s des images collective and developed for the Trouble Festival, Le Bureau des colères is a self-declared ‘artistic service to the population’ that wishes to explore the links between violence and representation, while highlighting the social emergencies of the city.

Step One: Anger Statement

Next, a call for participation is issued, along with various facial composites made from descriptions of the participants. Each call for participation also includes a small part of the statement, in the form of a quote.

The Bureau des colères then makes its archives available for exhibitions and events. Visitors can go to one of several counters to select images that call out to them and receive photocopies of the corresponding files in their entirety. The Bureau des colères gave us access to its archives for
our Art + People 2022 event. It also opened on Monday the 3rd October to allow those LD3 Forum residents who were unable to consult the archives on the 1st October to do so.

The two artists talk to passers-by using an administrative questionnaire to establish the reasons for their anger while aiming to pinpoint a moment where that anger boils over. This process is anonymous. The second part of the questionnaire is used to draw up a precise description of the imagery. The photograph is staged on the basis of that imagery. In this phase, participants are asked to embody someone else’s anger as if they were an extra in the scene.

As part of their contribution to the lab, for the Art+People 2022 event, the collective set up shop at the LD3 Forum, at Place Fontainas, from the 22nd to the 26th August 2022. The partnership with this association, which works for the well-being of the elderly, enabled the Habitants des images collective to flesh out its archive of anger.

The last step is the photography itself. From the 5th to the 16th September 2022, in a studio previously set up by the artists, the various actors take their places and assume their chosen roles.
